When the user in scenario 1 requests a Web object, the cache checks whether it has stored the object in memory. If the cache has not stored the object, it forwards the request to the source Web server, which responds with the object. In scenario 2, the same request is accepted by the cache, which polls the upstream cache at the ISP to see whether it has a copy of the object. If so, the ISP's cache returns the object, thus avoiding a round-trip com munication across the Internet.
